The Delhi Nursing Council was established in 1995 following the dedicated efforts of a group of nursing professionals who worked closely with the Health Minister of Delhi. The bill was passed in 1997, and on June 11, 2001, the Delhi Nursing Council Act of 1997 (Act No. 3 of 1999) and its associated rules were officially notified.

The Delhi Nursing Council's constitution was published in August 2001, and on May 17, 2002, the Health Minister of the Government of NCT Delhi inaugurated the council.

The objectives of the council include:

• Providing a database of practicing nurses in Delhi.
• Enhancing healthcare standards in the state.
• Acting as an agency to develop nursing staffing norms, recruitment, pay, and remuneration policies.
• Supporting nurses, ANMs, midwives, and female health assistants in delivering safe patient care practices.
